For reasons are of such a nature that they cannot be described in the attitude of a third person, that is, without reactions of afﬁrmation or negation or abstention.
When she expresses the intention to perform a particular action, she claims to do so sincerely. And when she requests that the other perform an action, she claims to do so “rightly,” that is, legitimately, or with authorization. Thus, corresponding to the three basic speech act types are three validity claims: truth, rightness, and sincerity. Understanding the speech act involves understanding the conditions under which the appropriate validity claim is satisﬁed: what state of affairs would have to obtain for the agent’s assertion to be true, what actions the agent would have to perform in order to be considered sincere, and what norms would have to be in force in order for the agent’s suggestion to be legitimate.
