If you are lucky enough to have fruit trees on your section, make sure you use these to best advantage, too. If you haven’t got them, plan ahead and plant some for future enjoyment. MEAT AND PROTEIN The way we think about meat has really changed. Pre-budget I would just go to the supermarket and buy whatever meat took my fancy. Meat is now much less affordable and is no longer a must-have for every meal. Vegetarian meals can be delicious, filling and really affordable. I was brought up on an old-fashioned regime of meat and three veg – if you don’t eat your meat you can’t have any pudding.

I resisted the urge to return to my old habits, and made my own laundry powder for the second time. That was a breakthrough, because since then I have never looked back and will not buy commercial laundry powder ever again. So, be warned: adapting to your new low grocery budget will not happen overnight, but it will happen – and quicker than you think. EXCUSES I HAVE HEARD I love getting positive feedback about our changed shopping habits, but one comment I hear all too often is something like: ‘I really love what you are doing but I could never do it because … I don’t have time I have a husband I have a teenage son I have a baby my family would have a fit I have young children I have plenty of money we don’t need to save I work we live in town we live in the country we only have the one supermarket I use all the expensive face creams … you know, the really good stuff etc, etc …’ These are prime examples of excuses.

Surprisingly they never missed a beat, although our cupboards were comparatively very bare and they were being asked to clean their teeth and wash their hair with baking soda. Stevie actually confided in me that she used to be embarrassed by how much rubbish I would pile into our supermarket trolley. One of the main grocery cuts was treats for the children, so icecream and cakes and biscuits all but disappeared, replaced by cheaper fruit and vegetables and staple ingredients like flour and sugar.
